THE OLD STABLES
The Old Stables is perfect for large groups of friends and family to get together in the New Forest. The ponies are no longer inside, only out! Its now a very large New For-est cottage, set back from the road down it’s own secluded drive off the High Street, in the centre of Lyndhurst, the ‘capital’ of the New Forest.
The huge cottage is a wonderful conversion of a fine Victorian stable building, a most unique large New Forest cottage, full of character with high vaulted ceilings, expansive living spaces and many original stable features retained or re-used. Big cottages sleeping so many people rarely have all the dining at one large table. The Old Stables does exactly this, making it the perfect venue for large family get-togethers, birthday celebrations, hen weekends and business events alike.
The village centre location is ideal for large group accommodation, any of the pubs, restaurants, shops or cafés are accessible in minutes without the need to travel out in cars. Although the village centre is prominent and lively there is hardly any devel-opment beyond this and you are able to walk straight out into the New Forest Na-tional Park in minutes, rather than needing cars for access to forest walks.
The dining for everybody in one room at one table makes this large cottage a great place to have a special birthday or other celebration meal. Book the chef’s team for the night and celebrate with the finest local seasonal food prepared with passion and presented beautifully at the table, with no washing up to do afterwards or any large wine bill – just bring your own drinks. And then no need to worry about taxis home – you are all already there! Just retire to the lounge or your room in your own time.
Until the millennium, the Old Stables was derelict, with the roof removed and part of the end fallen down, but had all the original Stable features intact. During the con-version we reinstated the roof and formed the internal layout and floors, opening up the large fireplace and reusing the stable setts outside. The cast iron stable divisions were used as the banisters and all the large beams, A-frames and other timberwork were retained and left exposed. The feature round windows remain, along with all the original character. Outside appears exactly as it would have done when the oc-cupants were horses rather than holidaymakers, the only additions being the dis-creet conservation rooflights which provide plenty of light to the glorious spaces in-side.
The lounge is over 38ft long with high vaulted ceilings and exposed A-frame beams, a large open fireplace, grand piano, pew and a couple of fireside chairs occupy a raised area, from which full width steps take you down to the lower part, which has settees, chairs, television & DVD player, and a projector for presentations (plug a lap-top in) or for films via the attached DVD player.
The kitchen / dining room has a table for everyone to eat together, with at one end the freestanding stainless steel ‘Udden’ kitchen units containing dishwasher and twin cookers providing three ovens and eight hobs. A huge larder fridge and a sec-ond fridge/freezer stand adjacent, with a full freezer, washing machine and further sink in the utility room just off the kitchen.
Near here is a double bedroom and a shower room with basin and wc, with two more bedrooms and a bathroom with bath, separate thermostatic shower over the bath, basin and wc, accessed from the staircase here. At the other end of the dining room, another staircase leads up to two family bedrooms with another similar bathroom. One of these bedrooms contains the hayloft door, now a window, which is seen from outside. All these four bedrooms have high vaulted ceilings, with stable balustrading to the staircases and the odd round window.
The other bedrooms and bathrooms are off the far end of the lounge. A contemporary shower room with wall hung wc and basin, and a bathroom with freestanding double ended bath, corner power shower, and wall hung wc and basin, serve the remaining seven bedrooms this end, one of which is a family room with sliding patio doors, two are double rooms, and upstairs is a vaulted and galleried double height space giving access to four similar smaller bedrooms with a double and single bed, and a Juliet balcony with views over playing fields.
LYNDHURST in the NEW FOREST
No horses inside The Old Stables any more, but plenty of New Forest ponies just yards away! The Old Stables is set in the heart of the New Forest, in Lyndhurst, the high street with its excellent selection of good restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, tea rooms and independent shops is just a minute’s walk, yet a few minutes further walk and you are directly in the middle of the New Forest, with beautiful open forest in all directions, perfect for walking and using the marked cycle paths.
An easy place to walk along to is Bolton’s Bench, where you can walk for miles into the forest, play a game of rounders in summer or go sledging or snowboarding in winter!
The location in the middle of the New Forest means that nowhere is too far away, whether its the coastal areas and towns in the south of the New Forest, the remote parts of the north forest, Southampton in the East or Bournemouth to the West or any of the beautiful areas between, you will not have far to travel from here.
“Just wanted to say what a lovely stay we had at The Old Stables last week. The cot-tage was warm, cosy and clean. The kitchen was well equipped and lacked nothing. All the appliances were in working order and the location in Lyndhurst was superb. Everybody in the group said the beds were very comfortable and the open fire added a great ambience at the end of the day. We shall certainly recommend this cottage to other large groups seeking a break away.”
“The house was absolutely perfect, thank you. We would love to come back another time.”
“Just a quick email to let you know we had an amazing 60th birthday weekend. Any worries that we had were immediately gone the moment we stepped inside The Old Stables. After our initial visit last May to look around, it was good to see the alteration and decoration that has happened in the meantime. Not only that, we were lucky to have all the new crockery and glasses, plenty of hot water, cozy beds and good heat-ing. All our guests were very impressed and I can guarantee you will have plenty of recommendations.”
“The Old Stables is a fantastic place to stay with a large group. Being so close to both Lyndhurst and the beautiful New Forest there is tons to do right on your door-step making for an unbeatable location. The accommodation is comfortable and the living room and kitchen a lovely mix of spacious but cosy.
Can’t recommend it enough, we had a fantastic stay!”
“I just wanted to let you know what a fantastic time we all had at the Old Stables. It’s a brilliant property and gave us everything we needed.”
“Thanks for a good week at the Old Stables. It was clean and spacious with a well-equipped kitchen (and a constant supply of hot water). It was such a cold week, and we enjoyed the log fire every evening! The big screen was great for watching films together. It was also an excellent location, being just off Lyndhurst High Street, and there was something for everyone (aged 5 months to 86!).”
“We had a lovely time in the New Forest and would definitely come again some day. The Old Stables was perfect and everyone had a lovely time. I think the setting was spectacular and I would personally love to check out more of the whole area as it was all new to me. Wish we could have stayed longer.”

Excellent position, just off Lyndhurst high street so we were able to walk to the shops and forest. The main living room is fantastic everyone was able to sit on comfortable sofas. The large table in the kitchen was also good allowing us to all sit together. We did manage to cook a lovely meal for all 24 of us although the saucepans and casseroles were limited and the tin openers challenging. Bedding was clean, showers worked well and we were able to stay later on the Sunday which was extremely helpful.
A fabulous weekend once we finally made it through the snow. Our second year here with 7 families and again had a warm welcome and great communication with the hosts.
We stayed here for my fathers 80th birthday and it was fantastic. Sitting everyone around 1 large table and then all together in the sitting room is pretty unique and made it a real family celebration. The location is excellent and gives you access to all parts of the fabulous New Forest. The kitchen is well equipped and all the rooms are clean and freshly decorated. I would recommend this to anyone looking to rent a large property. Hopefully we will all return again for my mothers 80th.
Have stayed here two years in a row on work team building getaways. The stables is clean, incredibly spacious, has lots of bathrooms, huge kitchen with everything you could need and the lounge can fit an army. We would happily go back again. Only constructive comments is that the heating can be a little tricky to navigate but host was happy to help with instructions.
The Old Stables was a wonderful venue for our annual university reunion. 17 adults and 15 children fitted very comfortably and the proximity to the centre of Lyndhurst as well as the Forest makes it an ideal location. We did all of our own catering and even managed to get Sainsburys' to deliver our groceries on the evening of our arrival. We will undoubtedly be back.
The Old Stables is in a great location being only a couple of minutes from the nearest pubs/restaurants/shops/cycle hires. We were a group of 29 there for a hen weekend and made use of the house to it's full! We hired Red Cherry catering to cook a lovely meal on the Saturday evening and had a shop delivered on arrival for other items.
The Old Stables was the perfect venue for the hen do I arranged. There were 28 hens so plenty of space for us to eat, drink & dance. The location of The Old Stables is absolutely ideal especially if you don't want to drive during your stay. We walked into town easily for afternoon tea and local shops have everything you might need. I would recommend anyone to stay here and just need another excuse to return!
We stayed for the weekend as a group of 6 families. We had a fabulous time. The cottage was perfect for our needs- warm, clean, well equipped and plenty of room for us all to eat, sleep and play. Lyndhurst is a great place to explore and we had a lovely walk with all the kids.
It has taken many years to find a place we can come back to year after year but at last we've done it!
I had my 30th birthday party at the Old Stables and it was absolutely the most amazing weekend. We filled the house with about 38 people, and everyone had a lovely bed and felt very comfortable. The kitchen is perfect for the amount of people we had, and was very well equipped, allowing us to cook a huge breakfast for everyone, and dinner, and with enough fridge space to store a hefty amount of food and booze!
The village is such a treat, there is so much there, and the local pub were extremely accommodating when we booked space there for lunch- really friendly staff and great food at very reasonable cost.
I would definitely also recommend the fish and chip shop in town!
We did a long walk and also played rounders on a field nearby.
I could not recommend this place more, and it was super easy to book, and be in contact up until our stay!
We stayed in The Old Stables in November 2015 for my husband's 30th birthday. As a group of 38, it was brilliant to find somewhere that comfortably fitted everyone and still had room for everyone to relax. I would highly recommend this for a lovely relaxing weekend, the long walks and lovely local pubs are lovely and hugely welcoming. Logistics of the weekend were made super easy and the team were excellent when helping me with various planning bits for the weekend. Hoping to come back and stay sometime soon!
